Tag 2.0: Back to the delirium of the playground

When I think back through the games I've played in my life it's inescapable that some of the most fun was had running like crazy through the playground at recess with six of my friends chasing after me.

Now I'm 'grown up' I find this doesn't happen any more and that's a shame, which is why I hope to build Tag 2.0 - a game to take you back to the delirium of the playground.

What's fun about tag?

Playground games, of which tag is perhaps the most universal, are fun for a ton of reasons:

  • Anyone can play - you just need a body
  • Any number can play - they get better the more people there are
  • They're collaborative and individual
  • The vertigo of the chase
  • They're active
  • They're simple
  • There's limitless variations
  • And many, many more

What if life was a game of Tag?

A series of mini-games

I intend to make a series of multiplayer mini-playground games in Processing to take you back to when they used to run like crazy across the playground.

Games in mind are tag, stuck-in-the-mud, stages, and kiss chase. I'll be drawing on all the best playground narratives including the lunch lady, bullies, your first crush and skinned knees.

With the capabilities of code I'll be able to add more features lacking from when you last played these games in the playground: bases that time out or move, different color sides, special skills, the fun without the sweat.

Think Tron for the playground
