General
Carry your important documents with you
everywhere
- You never know when you may need them
Passport
- Know where it is
- Handy for ID
- I use my UK Driving licence usually
Bank details
All Berkeley correspondence
Don't forget your student ID number,
passphrase and pin
-
Write them down everywhere!
Get a diary early and start putting in dates
- All talks
- Performances
- Meetings
- Etc.
- Otherwise you'll miss them
Keep checking the Internet
- Lots of class notices will come up
- Meetings and interesting talks will be posted
Get a map
-
Practice finding your way without it!
- Don't be afraid to explore
- You can find a lot of interesting places
- Have a look around the shops
- Notice where things are (like the post
office or a good book shop)
Try new things
- You can always leave if you don't like it
- You never know who you may meet and the
new places you may see
Weather
- It will regularly be cloudy and cool in the
morning just to warm up in the afternoon
- Don't get caught out
- Almost everyday it warms up
Meet people!
- Meet people eveyrwhere from queues,
orientations, tours, cafes, clubs etc.
- It can't hurt to know a few friendly places
around the place
- Or people to show you around and introduce
you to others
-
It's a great opportunity to practice your social
skills!
Go looking for the things you're interested in
- If it's Ultimate Frisbee clubs, singing,
swimming pools, or discussion groups go
looking for it
- At the beginning of term people will help you
find everything you want to
- Asking lots of people can sometimes help
Check-out the different classes
- Though it made my first couple of weeks
busy it was good to check out several
different classes
- You can sit in on them for the first 3
weeks
- It helped me make my decision
- But to make your decision speak to your
supervisor also
- For a PhD you have to pass the
qualifying exams in January
- Your supervisor and current graduate
students are the best people to speak to
about these and whether it will affect
the courses you take
-
(I haven't done them yet!)
