 I bought $500 cash
+ ~$2500 traveller's cheques
Traveller's cheques worked pretty well as it
was no problem to change them and I was
able to pay for my first months rent with them
- They were also pretty safe if they were lost or
stolen
- I paid them into my account as soon as I got
one
Get a bank account as soon as you have an
address
- (I went with Bank of America but I'm not sure
who is best)
- It takes a while to get cheques and
particularly debit cards
- You don't want to keep charging thing to your
English credit card as it will be a hassle to
pay it off when your salary starts coming in
 You'll need lots!
- Unfortunately with travelling around to find a
house
- No fixed place to live - lots of meals in cafes
- Buying textbooks + stationary
- Any clothes you've forgotten or need for clubs
- It gets expensive
- Try to be careful with your money but enjoy it
too
